-Understand how geography affected the way people in the colonies and later the early nation viewed the ideas of freedom and liberty.

-Understand the important contributions immigrants had on molding the new nation.

-Analyze and reflect upon the different symbols that were considered to represent the ideas of freedom and liberty.

-Consider the impact the institution of slavery had on the interpretation of freedom and liberty
over time in the United States.
 

This unit will introduce the students to how America came from a group of thirteen colonies to a unified nation with a strong sense of liberty and freedom.
